The Revolutionary War                                                                                                                                            The Revolutionary War also called the American Revolution began in 1775.  The war forced forced Great Britain to recognize the independence of the 13 colonies. People came to the America for freedom of religion, government and taxes. The British wanted other things for the colonists, hence the revolution. Many brave new Americans met secretly to plan and plot their retaliation and fight for their rights. They elected the first general of the army, George Washington.Tension was building between Great Britain and the colonist for ten years before the war began.  Although the colonists were a rag tag army and the British were financed with much technology and soldiers, the call for freedom was much stronger and the colonists beat the British and set up their new rules and regulations for this new nation. They are the Constitution and The Declaration of Independence.
This was the first of many wars we Americans have fought to keep our rights and freedom alive. This first fight for freedom was during a time in our nations history when food shelter and the elements of the cold New England climate  played a big part on survival. Many brave freedom fighters died for the cause  and many families had to struggle to feed themselves.  Widows had to remarry in order to survive the times,  the colonists had to grow  their own food, sew their own clothes, and build their own homes.
Life was hard according to our standards today.
The Civil War

The Civil War is said to be the bloodiest war on the American soil. More than three million men fought in the Civil War. Two percent of the population, more than 620,000 people, died in this war. The Civil War began in 1861. The difference between the South's and the North's  opinion of slavery led to the American Civil War. President Lincoln felt  that the preamble states all men are created equal, therefore slavery should be abolished.  The North opposed the slavery they thought slavery was horrible, many of the slaves sufferred from beatings, and starvation, they were sold and separated from their families. Slave trade was a big market, southerners paid money at auction for the strongest slaves in order to keep their cotton farms producing. However, the South thought differently. They depended on the slaves to do all their farm labor, cooking, and cleaning for them and were severely  beaten  if they refused to do so. They thought  that if they freed the slaves then nothing would get done, so they despised the North for sticking their noses into their business. Soon the civil war broke out. The South was called  the Confederates, and the North was called the Union, also known as  yankees. The Union had factories , ammunition, supplies, ships, and  the president backing them. The south had mostly  honor, and a lot of plantation owners that had never even done physical labor, never mind living  in wilderness with little food or supplies.  Gen. Grant for the Union and Gen. Lee for the Confederacy fought many battles  but in the end , Gen. Lee surrenedered to Gen. Grant  and the fighting part of the war was finally over.
